Getting started

Do I need to know how to skate before trying speed skating?

Most of our skaters have had some experience with hockey or figure skating. While the stride is quite different, prior experience is helpful. Our practices are structured training sessions — not learn-to-skate classes. If your child is brand new to skating, our trial program is a great low-pressure way to find out if they're ready.

How old does my child need to be to start?

We welcome skaters from age 6. That said, speed skating is a fast-paced, high-awareness sport — skaters need to be mature enough to take direction from coaches and stay aware of what's happening around them. There are sanctioned competitions for skaters as young as 6, but younger skaters may find it demanding. Come out for a trial and we'll help you gauge readiness.

Where do you skate?

The Jets skate at the Bobby Forhan Ice Rink inside the Magna Centre at 800 Mulock Dr, Newmarket. We train on the Olympic-size pad — one of the best short track facilities in Ontario.

I'm a hockey player or figure skater — will speed skating affect my other skating?

Many of our skaters come from other sports and find speed skating makes them better athletes overall. Hockey players often notice improved speed even on hockey skates. Speed skating focuses heavily on endurance, leg strength, and overall fitness — a great foundation for any skating sport.

Equipment & gear

What equipment do I need to get started?

For your first sessions you'll need a hard-shell helmet (hockey, skateboard, or ski — not a bicycle helmet), eye protection, cut-proof gloves, a bib-style neck guard, and knee and shin guards (soccer pads work fine). The club has skates available to try or rent for the season. Visit our equipment page for more detail.

Where do I get speed skating equipment?

There aren't many local retailers that stock speed skating gear. The club has arrangements with vendors and can help you get set up with the right equipment. Gear is also available at regional and provincial competitions. When you're just starting out, there's no need for specialized equipment — the club can rent you skates.

What about Jets race suits and apparel?

Competitive skaters typically purchase a Jets racing suit — our suits have a distinctive look that our skaters are proud to wear. They're not mandatory for new skaters. We usually do a group order once a year to get a better price. New members can also look for used suits from other members. Visit our store for current apparel options.

Competitions & ice time

Where can I watch a competition?

There are sanctioned race meets at different levels across Ontario, including several within an hour of Newmarket. New skaters race against others of similar ability — it's a welcoming environment. Check our calendar for the current competition schedule.

Can I get extra ice time beyond Jets practices?

Some partner clubs welcome guest skaters at their practice nights. You'll often see skaters from Toronto and Markham at Jets practices and vice versa. Check with individual clubs on their guest policies — our own guest policy is outlined on the programs page.

Volunteering & the club

I'm a parent — how can I help?

The Jets run entirely on parent volunteers. During practices we always need help with off-ice activities — moving pads, helping skaters onto the ice, filling water buckets. There are also organizational roles on the board and at competitions. Every contribution is appreciated and makes a real difference.
